A key you end up holding the whole time, a phone that slides along your hip on a run, a card you stuff into your shoe after all. Leggings with pockets solve that, but not every pocket does the job equally well. This guide shows what to check before you choose gym leggings with pockets, and which style Igor & James makes for it.
Why the pocket matters more than you think
A pocket on a pair of leggings is not an extra that just happens to be there. The fabric around the pocket has to be firm enough to hold its shape once there is weight in it, and the seam has to stand up to repeated movement. A badly placed or shallow pocket feels different after a few reps than it did in front of the fitting-room mirror. The difference between leggings with a well thought-out pocket and a pair where the pocket was added as an afterthought usually comes down to details you only notice once you are moving.
Pocket depth: the difference between holding on and losing it
The depth of the pocket decides whether your phone stays in place during a sprint or slides out during a lunge. A pocket that covers just over half of your phone may hold it on the walk to the car, but not through a session with jumps or changes of direction. Look at how the pocket compares to an average phone size, not only at whether there is "a pocket". A pocket that is slightly deeper than you need can feel unnecessary at first, but it is exactly what you want once you really start moving.
Placement: hip, thigh or lower back
Where the pocket sits decides how it feels in motion. A pocket on the hip sits close to your centre of gravity and moves less than a pocket on the outside of your thigh. A pocket at the back can dig in as soon as you sit or squat, and is harder to reach while you are moving. For most workouts a side pocket at hip height is the most stable choice, especially for exercises with a lot of direction changes such as lunges or lateral movements.
Does it stay put while you move
A pocket without any grip works fine on a relaxed walk, but not during interval training or a run. Check whether the pocket fits snugly enough to hold your things without a zip or velcro, or whether it has a closure. The best way to test this is while trying them on: bend, squat and move your leg the way you would in a workout, instead of only standing still in front of the mirror to see how the pocket looks.
What a pocket does to the fit
Extra fabric and a seam at pocket height can make the fit fall slightly differently from leggings without a pocket. That is not a drawback, but it is worth knowing if you are used to seam-free leggings with no break in the fabric at all. A tailored fit with a pocket generally holds its line better than a straight cut, simply because the fabric around the pocket has less chance to bunch up.
Pocket versus running belt or armband
A separate running belt or sports armband solves the same problem, but adds another item you have to put on, adjust and put away again after training. A pocket built into your leggings asks nothing extra: you pull them on and your things have a fixed place straight away. For workouts where you wear leggings anyway, the pocket in the leggings themselves is usually the simplest solution, as long as depth and placement are right.
Leggings with pockets at Igor & James
The Embrace Sport Bottom is designed with side pockets and a tailored fit that moves with you. The fabric is premium, soft and lightweight, with just enough stretch to hold its shape during a workout. The pocket itself carries a grid code that tells the story of James, a detail that makes the piece recognisable without being loud. If you would rather train or go for a run without thinking about where your phone is, this style gives your keys, card or phone a fixed place.
Want to see it next to other styles, or prefer leggings without a pocket for a cleaner, seam-free line? The full selection is in the Igor & James leggings and bottoms.
In short

- Test the pocket in motion: bend, squat, sprint, not only standing in front of the mirror.
- A tailored fit holds its line around a pocket better than a straight cut.
- A built-in pocket replaces a separate belt or sports armband without an extra item.
